Vices in Verses is the second release from the Florida based band Blaine The Mono. Their first EP, One Rail, Two Tracks, was a short but very satisfying taste of the bands sound in its early stages. Vices manages to take the band a step further by showcasing even more of the bands unique approach to bluesy rock n’ roll.
After listening to the cd several times it was apparent that Blaine had a vision for what they wanted this cd to be. Taking care to handle the production values the right way, the band has crafted a cd that doesn’t have to worry about quality issues. The effects placed into the recording serve well to enhance the overall sound of the songs instead of masking imperfections. The effect used on Randi Stickles screams serve well to highlight the singers abilities without acting as a crutch.
Instrumentally the whole package is solid. The band delivers bluesy riffs layered with a hard hitting rock exterior. This isn’t another rock rehash. The band has forged its own sound. Randi shines on vocals in both the softer sections as well as the screams that are present throughout the release.
Stand out songs include the hard hitting song “Missing” that serves as the opening track, ”Raise This Glass”, and the catchy instrumentals of “Svine Munich”. The whole release is solid and there isn’t a single track that you will skip, even after multiple plays. Blaine the Mono exceeded my expectations on this release. Vices in Versescombines well written songs with great production values. This is an example of an unsigned band releasing material that is fit to go up against the giants of the industry. Highly recommended.
