Review - Daybreak Embrace - Mercury

Mercury is the latest release from the South Florida band Daybreak Embrace.  Their 2010 release, Tomorrow Awaits, was a solid rock EP with good hooks that showed a lot of promise. Fans that endured the wait for new material are being treated to a much bigger, bolder, and more refined version of the band in this release. You'll notice the difference in production and quality as soon as the first track begins. It's always good to see bands take the next step with their material and Mercury sounds like an evolutionary step in the right direction.

"Severed" opens up the cd with plenty of fire. Putting vocal effects to great use, the band delivers a Filter-esque high energy track to start the onslaught. "Faded" is the first single off the new release and serves as a transitionary track between the two albums. Combining some of the best elements of the first release with the added production and depth of the latest, "Faded" gives long time fans what they were accustomed to with an added layer of polish. Things take a somber turn in the tracks "Desperation" and "Welcome Silence". This gives the cd a well rounded cast of songs to showcase. The great thing about Daybreak Embrace is that they can handle the slower material without creating something boring that feels like filler.

Overall, the quality of the new cd is really impressive. My only complaint with the entire package would be that the first few songs are so good that they overshadow the latter material. There isn't any tracks I would skip as everything is quality material. It's just that the opening tracks hit you a little harder and stay with you immediately. Mercury is definitely a step in the right direction for the band and i'm looking forward to hearing them continue to evolve. Keep your eyes on Daybreak Embrace and make sure to connect with them on Facebook to get all the latest.
