Reviews - Hawkai, Piper Saint, and Imber

Hawkai - Prey

Hawkai is a rock band based out of Australia. Their 2012 release Prey has a sound that fuses modern and classic rock together to give them their own sound. Listening to the album you get the feel that you are listening to a classic rock album that was remade by Incubus. Take that as a compliment.

The production values are solid and do the songs justice. The opening track “Broken Walls” establishes the guitar heavy sound of the band and it continues on until the finale in “Wasting Time”. Fans of rock music should find a lot to like here. Give it a spin in the bandcamp link below.

Piper Saint – This City

Piper Saint is a UK based rock band that delivers great melodies across their four track EP. The EP was released in 2011 but I think it’s worth covering for those that never picked up on the group. Uxia’s vocals are very emotional and stand out in the slow sections of the songs. The tracks don’t fall victim to redundancy because of the well written instrumentals. Slower, emotional pieces of the songs are always followed by a quick change in tempo to keep everything interesting.

My favorite songs off the EP are “We’re Not Going There Again” and “Where You Want To Be” (Video below), but I don’t think there is a bad track on the four song EP. Well worth your time and money to check the band out. They have a new track available on their Facebook page so if you like what you’ve heard, go check it out.

Imber – The Breaking Point

The Swedish based metal group makes a permanent place for itself on my playlist with their latest release. The Breaking Point comes out swinging with a combination of catchy hooks, solid instrumentals, and plenty of power from their frontwoman My Anderson. My’s screams are a crucial part of this release and help define the bands sound. My two favorite tracks on the release are “Like a Ghost” and “Naive”. Both these songs showcase the bands aggressive side and highlight My’s abilities. Things get a bit more melodic on “No End of Us” but the track is solid and adds a bit of diversity to the EP.

Overall this a fantastic release that everyone should look into. Solid from start to finish on vocals, instrumentals, and production values. This is one of my favorite releases this year and could very well be one of yours too. Go pick it up.
